Key Lessons from the Taliban Takeover in Afghanistan

Earlier this week, we saw hundreds, even thousands, of people storm the runways at Afghanistan’s international airport in Kabul trying to hop onto a plane following a Taliban takeover of the country. So terrified were they of being ruled yet again by this harsh Islamist military organization (who’d ruled from 1996 to 2001) that they would risk their lives to escape. These chaotic scenes depicted the desperation of people trying to escape their homeland in pursuit of freedoms we often take for granted, including the freedom to worship.

In this latest crisis, we must reflect on what God is trying to teach us. Here are a few key lessons to guide us in our Christian journey:

  1. Don’t neglect our present religious freedom. As the Taliban espouse a strict and brutal form of Islam, their rule comes with persecution for Christians and other religious groups. We know the religious freedom we enjoy now will not last forever, but we shouldn’t take it for granted while we have it. We must take advantage of our opportunity to worship together and support one another as a body of Christ. “Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25 Berean Study Bible
  2. Don’t put your trust in flesh. For 20 years, the United States army was in Afghanistan, bolstering the Afghan army with all their weapons and highly trained soldiers. When the US withdrew with just a week’s notice, it left a vacuum that was easy for the enemy Taliban troops to fill. Afghan troops didn’t have the will or confidence to defend their own country once left on their own. The security they thought would always be there was fleeting. Jeremiah 17:5 reminds us that our fellow humans will fail us. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD.”
  3. In Jesus Christ, there is true freedom. Rather than putting our hope in the things or people of this world, we must recognize that our only hope is in Jesus Christ. In Him, we can access true freedom. That’s why John 8:36 (NIV) says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” If we cling to Jesus, no matter what trials may come, we can be assured of eternal peace and freedom.

The Taliban takeover is just one of many crises presently facing our world. Right before our eyes, we today witness '..... distress of nations, with perplexity,’ as referenced in Luke 21:25. There is obviously no better time for us as a church to be connecting like Jesus.
