The Greatest Gift of All

Every Christmas, people worldwide are faced with a sometimes impossible task—buying just the right gift for their loved ones, coworkers, bosses, kids’ teachers, etc. Sometimes, they nail it; other times, it’s a miss. I’m sure we’ve all received gifts that made us wonder, “What were they thinking?” I certainly have. But my grandfather, Emmanuel Dyett, was especially skilled in gift-giving. One year, he bought me my first flute, which took me through years of band. Another year, he bought me and my brother a keyboard, which brought us hours of entertainment.

But what I remember most about him are his intangible gifts. Grandpa was a quiet man whose presence spoke volumes. A native Trinidadian, he sacrificed to create a better life for his family in Canada. He poured into us collectively and individually, leaving a lasting legacy. From him, I gained a love of travel, music, writing and public speaking, and a desire to be a missionary, whatever my vocation.

Interestingly, his first name, Emmanuel, is a variation of Immanuel—one of Jesus’s many titles. Matthew 1:22 speaks of Jesus fulfilling prophecy as the Messiah, or Saviour, of the world. “‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us.’” Grandpa had his flaws, as all humans do. Still, his ministry of presence gave me a glimpse into the promise of “Immanuel”—Jesus, as God with us, exemplifies God’s constant presence in our lives.

Furthermore, “Immanuel” emphasizes the duality of Jesus’s nature—fully divine, yet fully human. The same Jesus who loved us enough to leave heaven and die for our sins understands everything we are going through due to His experience on earth. This duality makes Him our perfect Advocate and Best Friend. Hebrews 4:15,16 assures us, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

God with us—what an incredible gift! Let us draw closer to Jesus daily through the Word, allowing Him to be our oasis in a chaotic world. And as He fills us with love, joy and unshakeable peace, let us share the promise of Immanuel with a world desperately in need of hope and healing.

They followed the star to where the humble infant was cradled in a manger. The wisemen then “bowed down and worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:11). Yet the religious leaders, who were not ignorant concerning the prophecy that declared the birthplace of the Messiah, refused to make the effort to go to Bethlehem to see for themselves. This was the beginning of their rejection of Christ. How do we prevent our hearts from growing cold to Jesus? See how you too can follow the star today and bring your gifts to Him, like the wise men did so long ago.
