New Life Emerges from Disaster

Who could have imagined any joy amidst the horror and destruction caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake along the border of Türkiye and Syria three days ago on Monday, February 6, 2023?   Yet, a day after, as rescue workers desperately searched under rubble to find survivors, a newborn baby girl was pulled out alive.

Whilst reading the story on the BBC’s website, a feeling of joy swept over me. After hearing of deaths rapidly rising into multiple thousands, news of this one newborn lifted my spirit and reminded me that the Creator God still offers us hope amidst our worst experiences.

Ministry Leadership Training, February 11, 2023

Ontario Conference is to host a second round of virtual training for ministry leaders at 4:00 p.m. on February 11, 2023.

All ministry leaders, especially newly-elected ones, are invited to attend.  Many of the workshops were held on the first round of training on January 21, so these are repeats allowing those who were unable to attend to do so on February 11. However, there may be new ones.

Attendees will be pleased to know that there is no registration required for the training on February 11. They will only need to select the link for the appropriate workshop and go directly to it. The list of workshops and their respective links are available on the conference website, www.adventistontario.org. All church clerks, pastors and conference directors will also have a list of the links. Conference directors are available to respond to queries regarding their workshops.

Attendees will be happy to know that all issues arising from accessing the conference website during the January 25 training have been resolved. There is now immediate access! However, some people may still choose to obtain a copy of the link prior to February 11.

After Neighbour Complaint

On Thursday, February 2, 2023, Kendalwood Seventh-day Adventist Church, located in Whitby, suspended its highly successful food bank operations to comply with a local bylaw order first issued in March 2022.“We had to suspend operations while we consider how to move forward,” said Pastor Jason Levy. “It’s painful, like the initial stages of grief, but we had to act to avoid litigation.”

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is stepping up emergency response efforts to assist victims of the powerful earthquake that struck southern Türkiye (Turkey) and north-west Syria just before sunrise on Monday, February 6.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake and over 140 aftershocks devastated the region near Nurdagl and Gaziantep, injuring more than 13,000 people and killing at least 3800, according to UN reports. Authorities claim the quake was the strongest in more than a century.

“ADRA disaster response unit is already on the ground assessing the situation and collaborating with local governments and trusted partners. Rescue and evacuation operations are still ongoing in both Türkiye and Syria, and ADRA’s country office in Syria, which has two locations, will be manning the emergency response in the affected region,” says Mario Oliveira, emergency response management director for ADRA International. “As our emergency assessment progresses and we determine the critical needs of many thousands of reported victims, ADRA will be ready to help by providing aid such as multipurpose cash assistance, essential supplies, food, and shelter.
