Reflecting on the GC Session 2022

It’s been almost a week since the long-awaited 61st General Conference Session ended. It was unique in many ways. Chiefly, it was the first hybrid session, with in-person and virtual components. Extensive online offerings included an interactive virtual exhibit hall, live-streamed business meetings, incredible, multicultural video concerts and daily recaps from Adventist News Networks and other entities. But one thing that remained constant was the display of unity in diversity—from people singing in different languages to interpreters in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and ASL to flagbearers in traditional costumes during the hybrid parade of nations. I also appreciated seeing delegates and church leaders from Canada, the U.S., Ukraine, Madagascar, Venezuela, Brazil, Jamaica, China and more.

The General Conference Session reminds me that we are not alone; we’re part of a worldwide family. And although we sometimes disagree, as families do, we are united by a sense of mission and love. Thus, this week’s OCN features an article by Pastor Shawn Boonstra pondering what unity means when we don’t always view things the same. Also, click here for an article on the experience of the first-ever deaf delegate to the GC session, here for an article on how the Ukrainian delegation made it to Missouri and here for an article on the secret life of the GC Session interpreters. And let’s continue celebrating the different cultures, languages, personalities and gifts that make up our global family!

The Funny Thing About Unity
Shawn Boonstra for Adventist Review

The cry for unity is not only an Adventist or Christian phenomenon. As much of the planet falls into chaos and ever sharper polarization, many voices now plead for unity in the political and social realms. More and more people, however, are despairing of realizing it. “I think we’re starting to give up hope that we can heal this nation,” one man recently told me after visiting a political convention that left him deflated.

Perhaps demonstrating genuine unity is now one of the many things that the Adventist Church has to offer a world in crisis. Not that you’d know it from watching some of the debates that unfold on the floor of the General Conference Session. A broad divergence of viewpoints occasionally drives genuine emotion at the microphones, and even a minor wording change in the constitution or bylaws can spark several hours of passionate debate.

Regardless of the appearance of conflict on the Session floor at some moments, I usually leave the Session with renewed confidence that we have done things “decently and in order” (1 Cor. 14:40),* to borrow a phrase from Paul, and that we are, in fact, united.
