Ontario Conference News

We’re gearing up for a busy summer at Ontario Conference!

Summer brings unique evangelism opportunities. Besides our Conference-wide virtual camp meeting (August 5-6), several departments and churches have planned exciting virtual and in-person initiatives. Please also note that the 61st General Conference Session is taking place next week, June 6-11, both virtually and in-person (scroll down for links and other info).

This week, we are shining a spotlight on an Ontario Conference ministry that has changed lives for more than 75 years. By God’s grace, our summer camp ministry at Camp Frenda is going strong. Registration is open now for various camps, which will run from the end of June until roughly mid-August, including two camps each for families, juniors and tweens, and one for teens. Learn more at

And enjoy an article written in 2020, Camp Frenda’s 75th anniversary year, pre-pandemic, that shares more on the history and special role of Camp Frenda in bringing children, youth and adults to Christ.

75 Years of Discipleship at Camp Frenda

When you hear “Camp Frenda,” what do you think of first? A picturesque lake, tree-lined paths, swimming, horseback riding, waterskiing and other outdoor adventures? Friendships with peers from across the province? A chance to participate in activities not available at home?

Most would concur with Camp Frenda Director Pastor James Rooney, who described his childhood experiences at Frenda as “unforgettable.” He noted, “When I stand [on the grounds] as director, I can picture myself as a 10-year-old running up and down the hill, along the lake. It’s still right there, very clear.” But there’s more to Camp Frenda than outdoor fun—at its core, it’s a site for discipleship. Pastor James said, “[At Frenda], young people from both Christian and non-Christian homes are invited to encounter God in a unique setting . . . We begin by training our staff to be disciples, to model Christ in their work ethic and their interactions with children.”

You could work at Frenda!

Statement from Ontario Conference President, Mansfield Edwards, on Recent Shootings

As an Ontario Conference family, we are deeply saddened by losses resulting from recent mass shootings in the United States. On Tuesday, the 24th, our hearts were broken at the news of 21 deaths19 students and two teachers—in a Grade 4 classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. This unthinkable act came on the heels of hate crimes at a Taiwanese Presbyterian congregation in California and a Buffalo supermarket in a predominantly Black neighbourhood. As we process our collective grief over these incidents, let us lean on the Lord to stand with us and give us strength (2 Timothy 4:17).

Let us pray for the families, friends and communities of those victimized in these senseless acts of violence, that God would bring peace and healing to their troubled hearts. Let us pray for the protecting hand of God in our nation, the U.S. and beyond as we see violence increasing.

Beyond prayer, let us accept God's call to be vigilant concerning the dangers around us. For instance, as a risk reduction strategy, I have asked our Risk Management director to engage the police to host training sessions at our schools on the appropriate actions to take in the case of an active shooter.

Finally, those struggling to navigate a world in which innocent children can go to school and not come home, can take comfort in this promise for the future: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." And He who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Rev. 21:4, ESV

Lights Are Not Just for Christmas

“Producing a professional-looking live stream is less about the camera and more about the lighting and visuals.”

Historically, our churches were not built with lighting in mind. Most of them have simple architectural performance. The COVID-19 pandemic has made that more apparent, leaving churches scrambling in the dark to provide an audiovisual online presence.
Growing up, I always heard my father say, “Video is light.” And now in 2022, this is even more true. Producing a professional-looking live stream is less about the camera and more about the lighting and visuals. In this issue we explain the types of lighting and some key principles involved.

Front Wash Lighting
Front wash lighting is your “workhorse”; it builds the foundation of a functional lighting system. The front wash are the lights that point toward your stage and podium. A key component within the front wash is white LED fresnels or white LED ellipsoidals. This is called your key light. Washing the stage involves evenly lighting the complete stage area with light.
For example, if your stage is 60 feet wide, you need to illuminate more than just the podium. If you want your choir to be seen properly, light the entire choir loft. Choosing the proper tools will render the intended results.
The more melanated the subject, the greater the need for a well-balanced front wash. This is the number one priority, and without it, your live stream will undoubtedly look poor.

Backlighting gives you the ability to define and frame your subject. Adding rear backlighting will instantly elevate your live stream to another level. This lighting element creates a separation between the walls and the subject and helps focus the audience’s attention on the performance.
For this application, it is best to use a lighting fixture that produces a soft light with colour-changing capabilities. We recommend barn doors or a specific beam angle to keep the light away from the front seating positions.

Background Light
Background lighting allows you to paint the canvas of your space visually with colour, texture, and movement. You can create astonishing scapes and set designs using numerous lighting fixtures like LED Zooms, LED beams, gobo, and cyc lights. To add to the background light creation, you can also incorporate LED walls as a graphical light source—either static or full motion.

When installing lights, start with access to the church from the outside. Do you have wheelchair accessibility that would allow for a boom lift, or will you need to build a scaffold tower?
Now that you are inside the church, you will require a few things. Working with a licensed electrician is vital at this point, as they would remove old lights and place new outlets and power drops. This is required by law.
Removing the pews or seats prior to the start date will help keep the process on schedule and on budget.
Since most churches don’t have an embedded catwalk system in the ceiling for removal or focusing of the lights, what do you do? Plan yearly or twice a year so you can maintain all the lights in your church to amortize the use of a professional service or scaffold and truck rental.
Sandy Audio Visual has successfully installed lighting systems for churches, chapels, and schools. If budget is a concern, focus on a well-designed front wash system that can later be augmented. With the proliferation of LED fixtures, the cost of operation and maintenance is extremely palatable for the church pocketbook.
The two main functions of church stage lighting are visibility and visual appeal. If you don’t currently have lighting, you’re missing the number one basic item to level up your worship environment both in-house and on the live stream.
