Changing Seasons

If you asked most people what their favourite season is, summer would win, hands down. But I’ve always been partial to fall. So many of my favourite things happen in the fall—my birthday (last Friday, October 21!), Canadian Thanksgiving and the leaves changing colours before winter. As I write this editorial, I’m enjoying the vibrant red, yellow and orange trees and bushes outside my office window. For me, fall is a time of reflection, gratitude and transformation.

In many ways, the view outside mirrors a change of seasons in my professional and personal life. You see, this is my final editorial as Ontario Conference’s Communications director. After much prayer and consideration, I have accepted a role as part of the North American Division’s Communications team. I’m excited, yet sad to say goodbye to my home conference—the place I remember fondly from childhood as my father served in the treasury department. It’s a bittersweet time.

As I reflect on my five years at Ontario Conference, I’m grateful for the fantastic people I’ve met and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences I’ve had. Among the multitude of blessings my role afforded me,

  • I travelled to many places, including Oshkosh, Thunder Bay, Albuquerque, NM, Lexington, KY and churches and schools across Ontario;
  • I grew as a writer and editor;
  • I transformed from being too shy to be on camera to being a host, interviewer and panel facilitator for different virtual events—and loving it!;
  • I rediscovered home, including reconnecting with childhood friends;
  • I discovered an amazing global community of Adventist communicators;
  • I collaborated with wonderful coworkers and church members across the province;
  • and I learned to rely on God as never before to bring me help and to strengthen me to do things I never thought I could.

I owe so much to this place and all of you. Thank you for your prayers, support, words of affirmation and other ways you have uplifted me over the years. Together, we navigated a global pandemic and other challenges. Together, we learned how to connect like Jesus. And as I move on to a new season, I will keep all of you in my heart and pray that we’ll meet again soon—if not on earth, in the earth made new.

Many thanks, and God bless.

Christelle Agboka, Communications director,
Ontario Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (2017-2022)

The World Food Programme estimates that 825 million people go to bed hungry every night. Of those, 345 million must resort to desperate measures to survive. Even then, it’s often not enough to prevent dangerous levels of malnutrition, especially in children.

You can do something about this.
