Operation Deep Freeze 2026: A Sabbath of Compassion
February 18, 2026 | Samanta Browne | Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church
On Sabbath, January 31, 2026, members of Berea Seventh-day Church stepped out of their pews and into the streets of Toronto for their annual Operation Deep Freeze outreach. Though the city’s air was bitterly cold, their hearts were warm with purpose as they sought to be the hands and feet of Jesus to underserved and homeless people in the community.
Volunteers prepared and distributed care packages to provide relief during the harsh Canadian winter months. Each package included warm essentials—socks, hats, scarves, and gloves—along with crackers and juice boxes for simple nourishment. It was especially inspiring to see the children, young adults, and Berea Church Pastor Kirk Dunchie serving side by side in unity and compassion.
More than just handing out supplies, this outreach was about making connections. Church members distributed tracts, prayed with many who requested it, and extended heartfelt invitations to join for Sabbath worship whenever they are able. These moments of prayer and conversation reminded each member that ministry is not only about meeting physical needs but also about offering hope and spiritual encouragement.
The impact of the day was evident on the faces of all volunteers. Later, as they reconvened on Zoom to share testimonies of their time in the community, the reflections were extremely heart-warming. The smiles were undeniable, a testament to the joy that comes from serving others. One member described it as a "soul-lifting service event," while another expressed delight in seeing young people actively engaged in ministry and community outreach. Truly, as they blessed others, they found themselves richly blessed in return.
We thank God for the opportunity of sharing His love in such a tangible way and pray that He will continue to guide Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church as it serves Toronto with compassion, unity, and purpose.
