We Are Witnesses

medwards@adventistontario.org

As believers, deeply rooted in the hope of Christ’s soon return, we hold dearly to the truth of scripture. In Luke 24:28 Jesus said, “You are witnesses of these things.”
Notice, if you may, that this is not a future possibility nor a gentle invitation.
Jesus’ address to His disciples is not, “You will be witnesses.” He didn’t say “Please be witnesses.” Or “Kindly consider being witnesses if you have the time.”
No, Jesus said, “YOU ARE witnesses.”
The phrase follows, “…to these things.” ‘These things’ likely referred to Jesus’ sufferings, His death and His resurrection on the third day. Perhaps it referred to the whole ministry of Jesus.
Is it not interesting that Peter said in Acts 3:15 that, “…to this we are witnesses.” This is the identity Jesus has given us. Do we believe it or not?
We cannot afford to relinquish this responsibility by delegating our witness to Sabbath morning sermons or church bulletins. We don’t need to know every prophecy detail. Ellen White says, “There are those who for a lifetime have professed to be acquainted with Christ, yet who have never made a personal effort to bring one soul to the Saviour. They leave all the work for the minister.” Christian Service, p 118.
Being a witness doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being faithful. Let us reflect the heart of the gospel in our homes, communities, and the lives we touch.
We are witnesses. The question now is: Are we willing to be what Christ says we are?
